People in the US are celebrating Thanksgiving tomorrow. Which got me pondering one of the pressing questions surrounding the holiday. Here it is in poem form.

That pure American brother, dull-eyed and empty-faced
Races Sundays in Jersey in a Chevy stock super eight
He rides 'er low on the hip
On the side he's got "Bound for Glory"
In red, white and blue flash paint
He leans on the hood telling racing stories
The kids call him Jimmy the Saint...

Thanks to the @thetoypress.bsky.social for a brand-new #wordoftheweek. This week, the word is "cycle," and it got me to wondering...

I read the first book in Ben Hatke's "Mighty Jack" series. I love how it adapts and reimagines the Jack mythos. The art is incredible (as you'd expect) and so are the characters. It's always good to see old stories being kept alive in new ways.

I've never really written a rondeau before, but it felt perfect for this theme. It's a poem inspired by the story Faithful Johannes by the Brothers Grimm, as well as @adamgidwitz.bsky.social re-telling of it in his amazing book "A Tale Dark and Grimm"

The speedemon is a critter from logger lore in the USA. Its body is mostly legs, though it does have a round central axis as well. Its favorite activity is chasing small woodland animals through the forest. It doesn't harm them, mind you; it just does it to be a jerk.

Reading a bit about the lutin of Acadia. A bit like gnomes, they were known to braid the hair of horses in the night. At other times, they might take the horses out for a midnight ride.

So, in the last 35 days, I've written four webinars, a magazine article, 10 blog posts, and approximately 80 poems. And it appears to have finally caught up with me.

I just wrote a poem for the collection I'm working on that made me stop and think, "Is this too scary for kids?" Then I thought of Grimm's Fairy Tales and Alvin Schwartz's Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark.

Kids have a much greater capacity for spooky than we often give them credit for.

I saw this lovely shrine to Thần Tài, the God of Wealth, over the weekend while visiting one of our favorite local markets.

Currently reading @authorgracelin.bsky.social 's book "The Gate, the Girl, and the Dragon" so, of course I had to stop and snap a picture of these imperial guardian lions that we passed on the street today.

For my #folklore people: Anyone got good stories about Hawaii's Menehune? I'd be particularly curious to hear stories from folks in or from Hawaii.

Another pic from our walk out at Martin Nature Park. The wild has endless ability to delight and surprise.

The Tlingit game ahl-kar or stick game involved moving sticks around in piles while they were hidden and wrapped in cedar bark. The goal was to guess where a marked stick was located. The marked fish was called "naq" or which means "devil fish" and was used as bait when fishing.

Though we didn't see them yesterday, there were plenty of signs that raccoons were out and about. While I can't prove it, I suspect they were up to some sort of mischief.

Leafing through a book of folklore called "Marvelous Critters of Puget Sound" which was published in 1913 and taken from articles in the Seattle Star newspaper. It's got my mind drifting through the cold waters of the Pacific Northwest.

A little over halfway through Franz Xaver von Schonwerth's collection "The Turnip Princess and Other Newly Discovered Fairy Tales," and I can't express how wonderfully strange and beautiful these stories are. Even tales similar to those found in Grimms' seem odd and new.

Sure, you've heard of Sasquatch, but how about Sheepsquatch? Our Friday #folklore comes from West Virginia, near Point Pleasant (home of the infamous Moth Man). It is said to have the head of a dog, the horns of a ram, and a wooly body. In some tales he's skittish. In others, aggressive.
