It’s mighty impressive that, of the five Oscar nominees for Best Song, (a) three of them are bad, (b) one of them is god awful, and (c) none of those are the KPop song.

I’m a little less than an hour into F1, and the idea that this is one of the 10 best motion pictures of 2025 is… confounding.

Honored once again to give a film its due in the Weird Movie Pantheon. If Richard Kelly ever gets around to finishing this confusing epic, it’s not like it’s going to get any less strange in the process. But let’s also hear it for the stars who committed to act in this thing, logic be damned.
"Southland Tales is a quintessential Kelly experience, with one layer of Philip K. Dickian paranoid surrealism piled upon another layer of Altmanesque interconnectedness, rinse and repeat."--Shane Wilson (@shanewilson.bsky.social) on "Southland Tales," now (finally!) Apocryphally Weird!

If I’ve said it once, I’ve said it a thousand times: when you’re handing your disastrous art career over to a sexy-voiced mysterious hole in the wall of the crappy studio apartment being rented to you by your rich uncle, ALWAYS check the provenance.
"One of writer/director Medaglia’s craftier decisions is to leave details about [the Hole's] true nature or origin completely unaddressed. The mystery only enhances her power over everyone who encounters her."--Shane Wilson (@shanewilson.bsky.social) on "Deep Dark" (2015)

Celebrate the coming of a new year with my pick for the best manga-turned-anime-TV-series-turned-tangentially-related-motion-picture with an authentically bonkers third act. That Utena is one revolutionary girl, that’s for sure. It’s a wild, wild ride.
"The film’s final image, with the two lead characters in a nude embrace and riding their sex luge into the horizon, is a fitting denouement for a film that has committed fully to following its own path."--Shane Wilson ( @shanewilson.bsky.social) on "Adolescene of Utena" (1999)

If it’s grinchy to say that a movie (by a filmmaker I actually like on the whole) is a cacophonous mess that shouldn’t be within a country mile of a beloved holiday, well then load my stocking up with coal, because THE POLAR EXPRESS is a cringe-inducing sprint though the uncanny valley. Fa la la…

Say hello to the Thai “Amélie” and so much more. The newest member of the Apocrypha has zombie motorcyclists, girls and teddy bears bickering, interchangeable fingers, and a bouncy song score — and that’s before we’ve even got to the main couple. Hard to find, worth the effort.
"No one in 'Citizen Dog' zigs when they could zag, and strangeness and silliness are very much the norm."--Shane Wilson (@shanewilson.bsky.social) on "Citizen Dog" (2004). Apocryphally weird (and very rare)!

We don’t get a lot of star vehicles in Weird Cinema World, but here comes a legitimate showcase for Michael Caine to parade his unique late-60s brand of disaffected caddishness, and for Anthony Quinn to shut that stuff down.
"...half-philosophical treatise, half-rejection of conventional storytelling... a full-throated mockery of expectations. 'The Magus' is aggressively weird—even hostile—to anyone who would try to make sense of it."--Shane Wilson (@shanewilson.bsky.social) on "The Magus" (1968)

You’re always hearing about how Scandinavia is the happiest place on Earth, and then you encounter this tale of a miserable boy whose parents are selfish and neglectful, whose drug trips are terrifying, and whose best hope is to become a bird and fly far, far away. Not so great, eh, Norway?
"Far from being a cautionary tale, even the most dire situation Lakki faces is laced with heightened ridiculousness. It plays like an ABC Afterschool Special, International Edition."--Shane Wilson (@shanewilson.bsky.social) on "Lakki... The Boy Who Could Fly" (1992)

One more podcast shout-out to my ol’ pal @tedprice3.bsky.social what made “The Completists” such a joy. (And you can still listen to the complete catalog on Spotify, oddly enough.) Thank you, Mr. Price. We’ll finish the Prince series someday. #Podsgiving

Happy Thanksgiving! Sorry about the nightmares. Blame @shanewilson.bsky.social.

History can make you cry, and @natedimeo.bsky.social does it all the time with “The Memory Palace.” Robert Smalls, Washington’s dance hall, and once I had to pull the car over because of a dog named Christmas. So many stories, little bite sizes of historical heft. #Podsgiving

This is another not-a-podcast, but Star Trek: Lower Decks is probably my my favorite TV show of any kind of the past 10 years, and all praise to @mikemcmahan.bsky.social for creating it and his whole team for bringing it to life. So sad it’s gone, so grateful it exists. LOWER DECKS! #Podsgiving

“Imaginary Worlds” by
@emolinsky.bsky.social is the NPR-style review of science fiction that we’ve always needed, and he digs deep into topics like game books or Afrofuturism. His explanation of the alignment grid is the best I’ve ever heard. When’s the Magic Tavern episode, Eric? #Podsgiving

Not that they need a good word from me, but @magictavern.bsky.social is still killing it after 10 years, which is a relief, because if it weren’t, I’d have to lie to my friends about how much I enjoy listening. Thank you for sparing me that burden, guys. #Podsgiving

Since I’m shouting out friends, @arnieniekamp.bsky.social has a new show called “No-Skip Christmas” which has made me love Christmas music after stores and radio stations tried to ruin it for me. It fills a need that I didn’t even know existed, and shows off conversation at its best. #Podsgiving

My friend @steev.bsky.social made a podcast out of his old “Frying Pan” segments in WGN, and they’re the funniest damn things. I know he’s only got a couple episodes left, which breaks my heart, but they are so joyfully silly that I want them anyway. #Podsgiving

I started listening to @escapepod.org years ago, back when it was my regular listening on the train ride to work, and it still provides some of the best new science fiction stories to be heard. The one audio fiction podcast that has stuck around all this time. Kudos, gang. #Podsgiving

Desert Island Discs has been a BBC mainstay for 8 decades, so does it need a shout-out from me? You bet. @laurenlaverne.bsky.social is a delightful host and proves week-in, week-out, regardless of whether I know the guest, that music is a superb way to get to know a person. #Podsgiving
