Hitting their stride. Already in “how can they be this good?” territory. Leaned into the Motown side of R&B for the covers and the originals act as songwriting templates that would be followed long after the Beatles themselves didn’t need to anymore.

A great album, and the Kinks were on such a creative roll that it could’ve been a double. That probably would have finished them off completely though. Wicked Annabella, Animal Farm, Starstruck and Picture Book with a taste of earlier Kinks-sounding Steam Powered Train make for a classic. Love it!

Too many great songs on this album to list, but there are also quite a few I’d just as soon skip. Among the lesser-known songs (is there such a thing?) there are special places in my heart for Cry Baby Cry and Long Long Long.

The more serious the work, the less important the means of creating it becomes. It should never be Brian Eno “vs” Charlie Mingus. The beauty of any art form is that there is more than one way to create it and methodology is probably not the best way to evaluate how serious an artist is!

For 6 weeks? This will seem goofy, but it would be 20/20 by The Beach Boys. Certainly not their best but there is a lot going on that I wouldn’t mind sinking my teeth into. That would go for any Beach Boys Lp from Pet Sounds through Holland but 20/20 I feel I have paid less attention to.

My label mates. They were a really fun band and great to hang with.

1972 Beach Boys. An additional 53 years of context would have made a big difference.

I needed to do this a few years back - got rid of around 1500 lps, about 1/3 of my collection. Then I moved and put everything into storage where they remain for now. I don’t remember what I sold except that I had deemed them inessential. It’ll be like Christmas when I bring what’s left home.

Sundown and Edmund Fitzgerald for sure. I need to do a real deep dive on his music - I feel I’ve not given him his due. That will change.

So You Say You Lost Your Baby is my favorite. The guy had it all: voice, looks, songwriting and vocal talent… should have been as big a star as the other Byrds eventually became but it wasn’t to be. Despite the misfortune we still were blessed with a lot of great music.

Oh boy. Sweet Lady Genevieve is one of my all time favorite Kinks songs. Daylight and Midday Sun are great too. Cricket is fun. Because of the overall sound/feel of the Lp I group it with Muswell and Showbiz in the Kinks canon. It’s a pretty good record with one bonafide classic.

Yeah, there’s a LOT to process if you’re so inclined. I’m currently listening to the work they did individually during their breakup. Some real gems there.

I agree with Melody Fair: start with The Bee Gees from as early as you can, but Bee Gees 1st thru Life In A Tin Can are truly one big piece. A run of quality music beginning to end. Their second wind (Mr. Natural on) was great too. Enjoy the ride!
