Lawyer, activist, former marijuana regulator, AI skeptic. Regulation is actually very punk rock
So true!

Are you involved in this effort at all? Just learned about it today but I’m such a fan www.the74million.org/article/why-...
New Legislation Would Ban AI from New York’s Schools
Carroll: A new bill would keep AI out of most New York elementary and middle schools and put the focus back on books, teachers and proven instruction.

Oh I love this. I knew the old English meaning of Malden, but I like the Dutch meaning so much better. "People's meeting / court of justice"!

And even more troubling coupled with the fact that many school districts are teaching kids to use chatbots to get answers to their questions

I would be glad to talk more and will pass that on to the letter's author too!

That's our community's letter!! It was written by a local parent who is an artist and activist, and we have all been finding each other after signing it and organizing. What a cool surprise to log in and see it being shared 😁

I don't think teachers want this either. Like so many workers it's not easy or even possible for them to speak up about it. But the only thing keeping parents from speaking up and organizing is the fear of being a troublemaker, and that can only hold for so long.

Every tech expert I know agrees with this view. I read Arvind and Sayash's book and it's totally reasonable. AND -- this doesn't contradict you -- it is absolutely crazy that this technology is being adopted in healthcare, courts, and (especially) public schools without being tested.

What kind of unrealistic results do you think people are expecting? I think most of us who at least somewhat restrict screens expect that it will lead to children having the ability to do things other than be on screens

Sorry but I am on your parents' side. They and your teachers probably played some role in you having an excellent ability to communication and critical thinking skills.
Plus, it's different from when we were kids. There was no creepy option to outsource all of our thinking and relationships.
