I write a little about a lot. - Politics (Canadian mostly), 2SLGBTQ+, and Weird Geekiness ... because.
Those "different studies" are also called "junk science" for a reason.

Wait until they discover there are eligible Alberta voters who don't vote because they either can't stand the options on offer, or their life circumstances are such that getting out to vote is impractical ...

Funny how they do that when it suits them, but then take a completely literal approach to reading legislation when it benefits their perspective.

In fairness, there is both the written law, and the intent (or spirit) behind the written law which courts can and do consider.

Fascinating. Thank you for explaining the ruling and principles of law underpinning it so clearly.

Not being a specialist in American law, there are times that things are done which I do not fully understand.

Of course what Streeting is ignoring is the fact that the clinical evidence he claims to be seeking already exists, and that the "gold standard" approach being demanded by Cass, and him indirectly, is deeply unethical if not outright harmful.

As Alberta is demonstrating before our very eyes, a government with ill intent towards the people it governs can abuse its power under S33, and that is unacceptable.
November 24, 2025 at 7:04 PM
S33 should NEVER be used as a sledgehammer by a government that is too lazy to do the hard work of actually writing reasonable legislation that functions under the terms of S1 of the Charter.

That worldview isn't "Biblical" in any meaningful sense of the word - and hasn't been in my lifetime.

"maximum freedom"? For whom - because as a trans person in Alberta, I'm not feeling that "freedom" thing so much.
November 24, 2025 at 12:40 AM
What scares me about it is the likelihood of our courts being drowned in a sea of hallucinated precedent cases in briefings supporting legislation created this way.

Ditto

On the other hand, he does seem to be "the right guy for the time" - even though there are areas I question things he's doing.

My take (so far) is that Carney is playing Smith along, but he has to know as well as we do that there is no commercial interest in building this pipeline.

Speaking as someone targeted by the UCP's legislation - very directly - when the UCP stops lying about trans people, the medical interventions and treatment of trans people, then I'll think about being "civil" towards them.

At the moment, I'm not seeing that.

This lawsuit is complete nonsense - although it doesn't come as a surprise. I had a couple of twitter conversations with Ms Ford at the time, and she was a long ways down the far right rabbit hole at the time. I can only imagine that since Smith took over that it got worse.
November 23, 2025 at 4:16 PM
Legislator handing their job to AI is laughable … only the unthinking idiots in the UCP would see it as a good thing.

Has anybody asked her when she's stepping down as MP then?

Why do I think he'll pop up alongside Nigel Farage again?
