this isn't to besmirch the gm custom, though. i think she's cool. but she was designed by katoki. which means that she's one of god's favorite children. she gets ALL the accurate art, game models, figures, ALL of her parents' college money,,,,

in nearly EVERY appearance after war in the pocket, she get shortchanged... either through wrong details or even completely missing ones...

A.N.I.M.E. zaku kai figure. it's slightly more color-accurate but doesn't otherwise doesn't deviate from the HG kit's proportions sourced from its listing on animota: https://animota.net/products/animota-e-fig6639?srsltid=AfmBOor8JG_7n35-RRix_eYsERhQlqDXxf9aFrylT_nwaNzYolMe9tma the gundam battle operation 2 render of the zaku fz. this one is notable in that it seems closer to katoki's MG concept art, but also has some extremely specific changes. the skirt grenade rack is gone. the cockpit hatch is animated wrong. the lower leg thuster covering got added back, BUT (and it's really ridiculous that this keeps coming up) the thruster under it isn't modeled as working. the zaku f2 is in this game as well. she's specced as more powerful than the fz and is modeled with extra thruster equipment

this wouldn't be so bad if only her HG kit was nerfed. but the HG is often used as a reference whenever she appears in something, so it has a trickle down effect...
some zaku fz-types used by the capital defense battalion. theres some panels of the fz that don't look like this, but in most cases ark performance seems to be using the HG model kit as reference material source: mobile suit gundam the plan to assassinate gihren, chapter 23 the in-game render for the zaku fz from the mobile game gundam uc engage. this one is pretty obviously a near 1-to-1 replica of the fz's HG kit the render for the zaku fz from gundam extreme vs maxiboost on. i couldn't find a transparent version of the render so the image is sourced from this video's thumbnail: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yopMmK8CEUY a screenshot of the zaku fz in new gundam breaker. since it's a game about gunpla, the ingame version being close to the HG kit is probably actually a good thing. it really highlights the issue with trying to make her compatible with the other HGUC zakus though, with how lithe and frail it ends up looking sourced from a steam new gundam breaker guide: https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=1532663164

it's said that the MG zaku fz's thickness was nerfed so that she can have parts commonality with katoki's own MG zaku f2. while we don't know if the HG zaku fz being EVEN SKINNIER is for the same reason, it's probably a good guess.
the HG fz has even skinnier limbs than the HG f2 btw

as a bit, as a joke, in minecraft, i will say that everything bad that has happened to the zaku fz originates from hajime katoki's work. mainly the thickness reduced-lineart in the gundam MG data book and the HG zaku fz that's derived from said lineart
katoki's concept art for an MG zaku fz, from the gundam MG data book. it might not look so different from izubuchi's zaku at a glance but i can list some of the specific design alterations: - the lower leg thruster covers are just straight up gone - the feet are smaller - the lower legs are thinner closer to the ankle, making the leg design flare out less - the upper half of the zaku starting from the skirt armor has been shrunk, with the exception of the head which ends up looking slightly oversized - the shoulder pauldron and shield are further shrunken in proportion to the torso - the hands are slightly bigger sourced from: https://scope-eye.net/model-data/1_100_Zaku_Kai/other_renditions.html an image of the HG zaku kai model kit. referring to the alt text of the previous image, all of the changes made by katoki have been taken even further, with the exception of the leg thruster coverings being gone. sourced from gundam planet's listing: https://www.gundamplanet.com/products/hguc-ms-06fz-zaku-ii-kai

yeah it's a fun movie
my favorite part is that the republic IFV towards the end of doesn't have settei uploaded anywhere, so either the design sketches are lost or the mecha designer (probably anno) winged it the whole way through
