I mentioned this below before I saw your comment. That was a great piece of work that had a big impact on me when I read it. The specifics are different today (who remembers the "New Alliance Party", "Christic Institute", and so on?), but his basic points were valid then and today.

Very sorry to hear this. His “Right Woos Left” and other writings really helped in understanding what was going on with some of the political groups of the time and in general how to think about the right.

This was the book used in the first Yiddish class I took, a YIVO one for beginners focused just on reading. It's a classic! Sounds like a great course. There are some interesting comments on the book here: ingeveb.org/pedagogy/%D7...

I was just looking at this in the Penn Parsed Corpus of Historical Yiddish and it reminded me of your post.

hmm, something like "there is a a little hole that can only be filled with cookies"?

Yes, it's mentioned in the book that he was friends with the MR editors, and he wrote a little bit of verse for MR that they still include in their mailings.

The review was written by Melekh Epstein, and appeared on 8/21/39. He left the CP after the Hitler-Stalin pact, which was on 8/23/39. So this must have been one of the last things he had published in the Freiheit. He later wrote the very interesting, if badly named, book "The Jew and Communism".
