RESUMEN: Este artículo examina cómo las referencias a la racionalidad y la razón se utilizan en las redes sociales para legitimar o deslegitimar la violencia policial colombiana contra lxs manifestantes. Para ello, analiza 8,421 tuits, recogidos a partir del hashtag #FuerzaEstebanMosquera, en los que se legitima o deslegitima la violencia policial en la Universidad del Cauca en diciembre de 2018. Ubicada dentro de los Estudios Críticos del Discurso (ECD), esta investigación se centra especialmente en los mecanismos discursivos y las referencias culturales específicas que se utilizaron en estos tuits. Conceptualizando la legitimidad e ilegitimidad de la violencia como un estado fluido en lu-gar de una categorización fija, esta investigación sugiere que la legitimación y deslegitimación de la violencia son procesos continuos, lo que significa que la legitimidad o ilegitimidad de un acto violento puede transformarse ha-ciendo referencias culturales y utilizando estrategias dis-cursivas adecuadas al contexto. Al examinar los discursos en las redes sociales sobre la legitimidad e ilegitimidad percibidas de la violencia policial, este artículo pretende contribuir a idear formas de promover una cultura de paz y no violencia. I think my response about the importance of statements against Israeli state violence (from more than one year ago) is also relevant here, so I'll share it in case someone is interested. The full text can be read here: academicborderlands.substack.com/p/the-noise-...
Now, I re-read DAIR’s statement to see what the problem may be. The statement does two things. First, it criticizes the political order of the region, which resulted in an apartheid system where Gaza Strip became a huge open-air prison. Then, it criticizes tech companies for their collaboration with Israeli and US militaries. Now, I would like to focus on why this statement was considered problematic. First, it was argued that this statement was doomed to be inefficient. The poster said that he didn’t understand what such a statement can achieve and how it could contribute to peacebuilding. He, as many others do when they talk about political violence, wrote with a level of confidence and certainty that would make lifelong students of political violence extremely envious. But I’ll dare to say that this statement, along with various similar statements, does offer a fundamental contribution. A successful peace process, any peace process, has the delegitimation of the previous sociopolitical order as a prerequisite. It’s impossible to implement nonviolent conflict resolution mechanisms before discursively delegitimizing the current order and its violent structures. These statements are an important step toward that objective. They delegitimize the status quo, which subsequently leads to the legitimation of proposals calling for a complete sociopolitical transformation. The delegitimized sociopolitical order isn’t limited to Israel and Palestine, but it also includes the whole West Asia where a colonialist order was imposed starting from early 19th century...

Mocking the academics and intellectual institutions, subordinating them to market-based evaluation, and constructing them as ‘public enemies’ are strategies that allowed the AKP (Adalet ve Kalkınma Partisi or Justice and Development Party) government to discredit critical intellectuals in Turkey. Combined with criminal cases and disciplinary investigations, these strategies allowed the government to discipline the whole academic sphere. This was done by creating division among academics and intellectuals, discrediting them in the eyes of the public, spreading fear and anxiety to intimidate critical academics, and inflicting mental and emotional harm.

It shows how this anti-intellectualism affects the reproduction and re-legitimation of war policies in regards to the Turkish-Kurdish conflict. To this end, first it presents excerpts from in-depth interviews with academics who were dismissed from universities by presidential decrees for signing a peace petition criticizing the military operations and human rights violations in Kurdish-majority cities. Subsequently, it shows some Twitter entries from a larger dataset where critical academics are attacked to legitimize police violence in a university campus. It concludes with underlining the importance of re-legitimation of critical academics and intellectual work in Turkey if authoritarianism is to be overcome.

Title: Power, knowledge, and universities: Turkey's dismissed 'academics for peace' Author: Serhat Tutkal Abstract: This article questions the role of universities in the power/knowledge relation by examining the case of Turkey’s ‘Academics for Peace.’ It is based on six in-depth interviews conducted with dismissed peace petitioners. Facing both the market pressures and the state oppression, the intellectual institutions in many countries are in a precarious position. Even though it is true that knowledge can be oppressive, it is also true that it can help constructing resistance. However, this requires new, and relatively autonomous, spaces of intellectual activity. Deriving from the example of Turkey’s ‘solidarity academies,’ this paper shows that the attempts to construct alternative institutions face numerous hardships, many of them deriving from lack of funding. It calls for contemplation on ways of dealing with the neoliberalization of intellectual institutions and the authoritarian political wave that numerous countries face while scrutinizing the relationship between scientific knowledge and power relations. Abstract: This research examines social media discourses to unravel how moral evaluation can be used to legitimize and delegitimize state violence. Based on a Colombian case of police violence targeting protesting students at the University of Cauca, this study unravels the role of moral evaluation of social actors and their actions in affirming or contesting state violence. It underlines the use of dichotomies (i.e., “bravery-cowardice,” “honesty-dishonesty,” and “evilness-goodness”), the attribution of immoral character traits, and inciting negative emotions as ways of attributing morality or immorality to victims and perpetrators to legitimize or delegitimize political violence. It especially underlines the use of religious references in moral evaluations. My latest article 'Animalization of Kurds in Turkish-Speaking Social Media' is published in Nationalities Papers. It examines more than 2.5 million tweets in order to show how Kurds are animalized on Twitter.

Abstract: This article analyzes tweets in the Turkish language from November 2020 to May 2021 in which Kurds are explicitly mentioned that feature negative animalization directed toward Kurds and pro-Kurdish organizations. It systematically compares ways of animalization attribution, to what entities the animalization is attributed mostly, and the attributors (actors) of animalization. First, it argues that animalizing dehumanization directed at Kurds in the data set principally occurs for attributing the lack of four human traits: agency, civility, morality, and rationality. Second, it shows in what different ways the lack of these traits is attributed to Kurdish people in general and to major pro-Kurdish groups such as HDP (the largest pro-Kurdish legal political party) and PKK (the largest pro-Kurdish armed group). Trustees Instead of Elected Mayors: Authoritarian Neoliberalism and the Removal of Kurdish Mayors in Turkey Abstract: This article examines the Turkish State’s recent practice of removing pro-Kurdish mayors and appointing trustees in their place without holding new elections. By comparing previous cases of removals of pro-Kurdish mayors to post-2016 practices, it argues that the discursive shift in legitimizing recent anti-democratic governmental practices should be read in relation to authoritarian neoliberalism in Turkey. To this end, it analyzes a Twitter account dedicated to promoting public services of trustee-ran municipalities (oluyor.net) and 89 YouTube videos that feature the trustees themselves.
