The price you pay is based on a formula following the energy market. The market price is multiplied with some margin factor for the operator and often a fixed sum is added on top as well. If market price is <0 it's possible for the consumer price to be 0 or even negative

And lastly there's the regular consumers. Replacing the old analog electricity meters with digital ones, allows for the introduction of dynamic pricing. Instead of paying a fixed price per kWh or even a variable one where price varies per month and is mapped to a consumption profile, \4

Another option to balance the grid, is to manage the demand side. There's factories that scale their production (and thus energy consumption) based on the energy available on the grid. Less energy means shutting down some machines, excess energy means running a few extra. \3

To balance the supply side, they have a few tools available, each with their pro and cons. Some types of energy generation are slow to ramp up or slow down, so they form the "base". Quicker options like gas-fired power stations are used to compensate for variable generation from wind and solar. \2

Yes, that's dynamic pricing for you.
Energy prices on the market continuously fluctuate based on supply and demand. Grid regulators have quite the job keeping those in balance so that grid frequency and voltage remain within margins. \1
