Checkout our latest article, just published in Animal Behaviour: The role of carapace colour in species recognition in a fiddler crab.

We examined whether Leptuca fiddler crabs use male body colour in species recognition.

“A male palm cockatoo puts on a musical mating display from trees in his territory. He sings, twirls and drums rhythmically against the tree, often using a percussion instrument, a stick or seed pod, clutched in his left foot…”

Article: Effect of luminosity on color discrimination of dichromatic marmosets (Callithrix jacchus).

Under intermediate luminosity (e.g. dawn) colourblind marmosets improve their color vision and can discriminate orange targets against a dappled green background.

Review: The genetic and evolutionary drives behind primate color vision.

“Despite several leading hypotheses, the reasons for the different evolutionary paths taken by Old and New World primates for trichromacy are still unclear and remain to be confirmed.”

Article: Detection of insect prey by wild common marmosets: The effect of color vision.

Males and females capture similar rates of cryptic insects, while females capture more conspicuous insects. Among dichromats, insect captures do not differ between sex.

Article: The conspicuousness contradiction: brighter males have lower mating chances in the damselfly Argia hasemani but not in Argia croceipennis.

We suggest that females might avoid brighter males owing to increased risk of predation during copulation.
