It’s also quite telling e.g. that even the spanish far right rarely expresses hostility, and even shows sympathy, toward Latino immigration!
At the end of the day I feel Spain thinks it can have a bigger game in the Hispanic world, more organic and reliable than Europe.

Spanish nationalism has always looked more toward Latam. I feel Spain sees itself as a Hispanic nation before anything else. People here care and talk more about the crisis in Venezuela than Ukraine! That is weird in Europe! It explains why Spain is weird!

appear to have more prominence and influence in EU decision-making. Weird! Spain has always felt somewhat disconnected from the rest of Europe. And why do you think that is? I’m not really sure when or why it started. Personally, I feel it’s partly because the disconnection is mutual.

I’ve always had that impression! Even today, for instance, at major NATO or European security summits, Spain often seems secondary, absent, or even somewhat defiant (like Sánchez refusing to commit to the 5% GDP defense target). Meanwhile, smaller countries as Poland

The good thing about Bluesky is that you feel more reachable here! I just read your thread on TW about the shifting meaning of the concept of cultural Europe. I found it fascinating how you point out that Spain, along with other countries, has so often been left out of the collective idea of Europe

Is like mocking white south africans during apartheid

I kinda get where you're coming from. "Shlomo" is a stereotypical jewish name and some might view mocking it as antisemitic. But he's literally a settler—an oppressor— I don’t think he deserves anykind of empathy

Though other topics, such as the history and current state of capitalism, are nonetheless fascinating, I noticed your interest in Polanyi, and I think he, undoubtedly, along with you, will be where I start.
Happy new year btw!

Instead, I am more drawn to exploring concrete alternative models: envisioning how they might look, how they could operate, the internal logics that set them apart from those of capitalist systems, etc.

Thank you!!
I think I'm a bit more interested in reading about alternatives to capitalism- not so much an exhaustive analysis of how capitalism works and its flaws, as might be found in more classic Marxist literature.

I was wondering if you could perhaps recommend books that would help me gain a deeper understanding of these subjects and the world we live in. Thank you!
