Not gonna lie, the head looks like tyranid carapace armor. Especially with the edge highlights.

Honestly I did some vrchat stuff, and the cats plugin would had a button that would take the active skeleton and put it into pose mode for you. Otherwise there is no way to avoid the awkward switching around between pose mode, edit, weight paint.
