Why don’t we declare a snow emergency tonight 12/9? Good question. Some thoughts below, but go to www.stpaul.gov/snow for more. 1) “Why don’t we plow?” We brought in extra crews today; they are staying longer; & night crews came in early. We’ve been plowing all day, & will plow all night. 🧵

In Saint Paul it’s always been 3”. Minneapolis it’s 4”. There are many other factors that go into it. Night

4) One of the reasons we are trying an alternate side parking model (stpaul.gov/newsnow) is because it allows us to go into residentials as soon as we are done with the main streets, & we can keep going back to clean them until the following Sunday. The link above has more. Thanks. 4/4

3) Snow emergencies are about moving residential cars, & the ordinances & system we have now require Night Routes to start at 9:00pm, & Day Routes start at 8:00am the next day. That’s what we have in law & our system. A snow emergency couldn’t be tonight, especially with our staffing/equipment. 3/4

2) Operationally, our crews need to focus on the main streets. Snow was coming down quickly. There is a chance of freezing rain & wind tonight, & we’ll get another burst of snow later tonight. Even Mpls, who has more staff/equipment & a different system, is doing the same thing. 2/4

We won't implement a model like this unless it's tested. You'll be part of this! The current model has a lot of flaws. You know where to find me. :)

Thanks. Our new solid waste and recycling program is going really well, and Minneapolis has been a great partner with us in all our work. We are implementing and considering big improvements in our winter operations and plowing. I'd love to have their budget :)

Thanks for posting this. We do maintain these lights even though they are in Falcon Heights. ("It's complicated" as they say.) These were damaged by copper wire theft and are on our list for repair.
