Thought I was going crazy when I just now saw a photo of the Betty from Alien Resurrection and was like "are those...?" but apparently the ship was first designed as a model kitbash so those are very clearly VF-1 Valkyrie forearms hanging off the side there.

The Art of Angel’s Egg reprint (released this month to coincide with the 4k restoration) is a great way to revisit a long out of print book. For fans of Mamoru Oshii and Yoshitaka Amano it’s worth picking up though like the name suggests it’s really just artwork, very little text.

The 1/1 scale SAFS statue that appeared in Model Graphix in the late '90s and in various Maschinen Krieger events in the early 2000s is up for auction. You can see for yourself here: auctions.yahoo.co.jp/jp/auction/d...

I haven't seen it mentioned yet (and is isn't even mentioned on Dark Horse's page for it), but the upcoming Gunsmith Cats Omnibus Book Three reportedly includes the original Riding Bean manga by Sonoda that ran in the short-lived Comic Noizy magazine.

In the realm of largely forgotten '80s cartoons with dubious legal situations, where does Mighty Orbots sit? Looks like someone has a bunch of official Mighty Orbots social media accounts and a page teasing a new Kickstarter campaign for a toy but there's like, zero copyright info anywhere.

It's May 2, 2000. 2am.

You fire up your USENET reader and check out what's happening on alt.fan.bgcrisis.

The top thread is about whether or not Priss would hate the Communists because it would make a really good story for someone's Duke Nukem 3D total conversion.

Time to go back to sleep.

So the kicker here is that the guy running it, Mike Kiley, went to go work for a new upstart in the industry to jump start their online retail business. The company? TokyoPop.

(well, Mixx, this was when TokyoPop was just the name of their web shop)

Digging through USENET archives and one thing that sticks out is how much people loved this place for decent prices, brand new product, and lots of special orders and recent releases. When the shop's closure was announced in November 1998, a lot of people were upset.

I wanted to do something extra for Zimmerit Patreon supporters so I went old school. In addition to Demon Zine Shinjuku they’ll be receiving this ‘90s style photocopied newsletter using extra material @spaceleech.bsky.social wrote that didn’t fit in the book.

Just a 30-second teaser trailer, apparently being developed by a new studio in Montreal (Flame Born Games). Hope it works out!

Virgin Punk…

Why didn’t they just call this anime “Straight Edge”

Tsukuda's Invasion of the Klingon Empire was released in 1982, around the same time they got into the bookshelf game market with a lot of boxed games based on anime series (and quite a few based on Trek and Star Wars, too). So this article was definitely a little ahead of the curve.

From the December 1981 issue of Hobby Japan, an article by Hideki Kakinuma (the same Kakinuma behind Gall Force, maybe?) about the Starships line of miniatures manufactured by Superior Models in the US. A lot of these were sorta kinda Star Trek and Star Wars inspired.

We'll be shipping out copies of Demon Zine Shinjuku to backers and shops in early July, general sales later in the month.

I've been reaching out to more shops about stocking our books but please let me know if there's a comic/zine/book shop you like that might be interested in carrying these.

His model kits are also stunning, the texture and paintwork on these still blow my mind.

What stands out to me most about Acid Bufferzone is the shapes and silhouettes of the characters and designs. They’re familiar, but different and a bit otherworldly. Not too surprising from the guy who designed Pyramid Head for the Silent Hill game series.
June 4, 2025 at 3:33 PM
On its face, Acid Bufferzone is a sort of art and model kit mash up that seems most similar to Kow Yokohama’s Maschinen Krieger but with a post-Soviet flair. That’s no untrue, but there’s a bigger focus on illustration work vs models here.
June 4, 2025 at 3:31 PM
The new Acid Bufferzone book came out last month and it’s fantastic. Masahiro Ito’s icy scifi series has been around for nearly a decade but the original booklets from Modelkasten are hard to get. This book collects the first six in one volume.
