The Arctic has just set a new record low for this time of year.
As of 26 November 2025, sea ice extent is the lowest on record for the date based on OSI SAF sea ice climate data (1978–2024).

The animation shows the changing sea ice condition at the former Larsen B ice shelf in 2022 compared to 2017.

Operational processing of the Level-4 (L4) CryoSat-2/Sentinel-3/SMOS (CS3SMOS) sea ice thickness product has been started for the Arctic 2025/26 winter season. The product version has seen a major upgrade from v206 to v300.

Operational processing and dissemination of the Level 3 SMOS Sea Ice Thickness product have resumed for the winter season 2025/26.

Unfortunately, RFI-induced data gaps continue to affect the #Barents–Kara sector of the #Arctic #Ocean.

The rapture has just begun at the North Pole! First, there was a slight jitter, and then all the data was lost and remains in space.

We are still about 4 weeks away from the maximum, but it is still worth noting that #Antarctic sea ice has reached its second lowest value for the day since the satellite records began.

#Polynya watch 👀:
The sea ice over Maud Rise is thinning. The next days will show if an open water polynya is developing. 🌊

The retreat of #Arctic sea ice gains its usual summer momentum. The #Pacific side remained strong this year, with the Beaufort Sea remaining relatively high, while the Chukchi Sea declined significantly.

This DOE writing is really absolute crap! I just took a look at it, I wouldn't let a student get away with that. They write about #Arctic sea ice, but link to a plot about #Antarctic sea ice. The cited ref has also not yet been reviewed. Tellingly, the DOE and its authors do not know what a DOI is.

#Antarctic #SeaIce July 2025. One interesting feature is the huge iceberg A23a returning south at about 30 W.

In recent days, a lot of sea ice in the #Arctic has melted. We'll see how much actually remains this year in mid-September.

RV Polarstern returned to ice floe number one. You can follow the field work live on the webcam.

With the southerly winds, the Polarstern is drifting northward. The temperatures cause melting. Current data can be found on the #CONTRASTS dashboard. #Arctic #Seaice

The developing polynya north of Greenland looks impressive. It will likely open a bit further in the coming days. The sea ice is being pushed away from the coast by the prevailing southerly winds. This area is usually covered with sea ice.

Exactly five years ago today, Polarstern left the #MOSAIC sea ice floe behind. The return journey wasn't always easy, but it went well when there was an open lead like shown in this timelapse. 🌊🧪
