And nights like this remind me why I keep coming back.Upper Onondaga Park rested quietly under a fresh layer of snow, the historic Strathmore neighborhood glowing softly around it. This park is one of Syracuse’s true treasures. Designed in the early 1900s by the Olmsted Brothers firm, the same family who shaped some of the most famous parks in America, it was built to be a peaceful escape for the community. At its heart sits Hiawatha Lake, a man made lake that has become a gathering place for generations.On this night the entire shoreline of Hiawatha Lake was lined with little lights. Hundreds of luminaries placed carefully by volunteers for the first annual Luminary Event. Each one flickered against the snow and created a pathway of warmth around the entire lake. In the gazebo the tree glowed like a beacon. Families walked slowly. Voices softened. The whole park felt transformed.From above it was breathtaking. A perfect circle of light embracing the lake in the middle of winter. A reminder of how beautiful community can be when people come together.
