A random look back at 30 years of metal detecting in Suffolk.
A mix of common finds, and some special.
Enjoy.

November has been a relatively quite detecting month over the years.

But I did get out a few times.

From 26th November 2023

17th century trade token issued by Iames Harlwin of Needham Market in 1666.

My head has never be turned by new cars, posh cars, fast cars, super cars...... etc..... etc.....

Comfort and practical is all I need.

That's why I drive around in a 19 year old Freelander 😊

There are 1.85 million objects recorded at @findsorguk.bsky.social
But still I have the only South African 1 Pond recorded
It's not a particularly rare coin, and doesn't meet the criteria for recording, but was done so out of interest 🤗
Same weight as a sovereign

The humble thimble, a very common find from the field.
Children practicing their embroidery, labourers closing sacks. The uses are endless.
From medieval to modern (ish) day.
Copper-alloy and silver.
Huge to tiny 🥰

Fragments of silver from the field, items lost in time.
November 23, 2025 at 3:12 PM
Popped into town to meet up with @kingwehha (Insta) who wanted to take a closer look at an item. (watch this space)

That's done, and as the rain has finally stopped for now, a visit to Christchurch Mansion is in order 🤗

A strange little find from many years ago. I think it's silver, going that there's no corrosion.

I really don't know what it is, but my best guess is a stitch picker?

A touch windy at Orford Castle this afternoon, can't think why the roof was shut off 😲

No finds from this day, so here's a rather splendid penny of King John found last year.
Minted by Miles of Oxford
AD 1205-1206

Coins minted at, or issued in Bury St Edmunds.
AD 1215-1667

A memorial penny to Edmund the Martr (St Edmund), King of East Anglia.

Who died this day, 20th November 869 at the hands of the Viking invaders.

A pile of Iron Age coins.

Nothing regular about these, dished flans, from round to oval, often with ragged split edges, a result of the minting process.

Such tactile coins, both now and 2000 years ago when they were in circulation 🤗

19th November 2006.

A copper-alloy scabbard chape.
No idea on its age, it was sent in for recording, but not recorded as deemed to be too modern.

Old or modern, it still has a place in my collection 😊

A few of my coin books have ribbon book marks, so I thought I'd get some more 🤗

An Iron Age silver? Stater

Norfolk wolf type

Perhaps one of my more unusual modern finds.

This is an antenna trailing weight, about 2lbs of cast iron. Part of an emergency radio system in B-24 bombers and others.

It would keep tension on a 100-300ft aerial wire reeled out of the plane.

(new replacement harness wire)

Well that's another 3 hours clocked up.
Best bits the George V penny, and Vicky farthing.

Think I've now covered the previously most productive areas.
But as it's the only field I have available, I'll carry on.

First decent find today, and it's only taken 2 hours 😂
