Great short read from my former @migrationpolicy.bsky.social colleagues @fratzke-susan.bsky.social and @meghan-benton.bsky.social! It offers a smart balance of needed reforms with a necessary acknowledgement of the challenges to get there - getting a diverse set of countries to agree.

Mass movements - even when facilitated - can have destabilizing effects, especially in already destabilized areas. It is unclear to me how relocating a million Palestinians to Libya (or Syria, mentioned as a backup) would result in something other than massive instability...
Exclusive from @nbcnews.com: The Trump administration is working on a plan to move 1 million Palestinians to Libya. Details of who would go, how they would go, and where they would live are murky, but the admin's serious enough that it's talked to Libya's leadership. www.nbcnews.com/politics/nat...

Details are murky and no final agreement has been reached, but the plan is under serious enough consideration that the administration has discussed it with Libyan leadership.

The recent US announcement that sanctions on SY will be lifted, and the meeting with al-Sharaa, are extremely positive developments for SY's recovery. But as I wrote for the GJIA, this is only one of many pieces of the puzzle that will enable sustainable returns.

What do foreign aid cuts mean for migration and displacement programming around the world? My MPI colleagues and I argue that without adopting a model that prioritizes innovation and sustainability, we will lose any chance of finding durable solutions.

#SyriaConf2025 is starting soon. A few questions:
1⃣How much $ pledged is new vs. restatement of existing commitments?
2⃣Is funding to 🇹🇷🇯🇴🇱🇧 being redirected writ large?
3⃣Is $ being redirected to voluntary returns?
4⃣Any new policy changes to enhance diaspora engagement?

What would safe, sustainable repatriation to Syria look like? In our latest @migrationpolicy.bsky.social piece, we explore what donor states should be thinking about if they are truly concerned about Syria's future and the future of the Syrians they host: www.migrationpolicy.org/news/post-as...
The Complicated Reality of Syrians’ Return
While the fall of the al-Assad regime is a seismic moment, it may be premature for sizable numbers of Syrians to return after years abroad—as some host countries want. Conditions remain unstable and r...
