that and the external reward was more "feeling a part of a likeminded community" and "nice words from strangers" than shallow gamified quantities

i'm exaggerating there was definitely some external reward but it's like. so much more saturated in the online atmosphere than it once was. numbers are attached to every interaction on the modern web
