A rare severe weather event I wasn’t working meant an impromptu chase. 20 knots of shear made for some relatively mild but beautiful storms!

Impressive capture of microbursts on the TDTW radar!

I've finished a new python project! You can now use a Colab notebook to view realtime and archived Level 3 VAD hodographs which are notably faster and less noisy than level 2 data. You can access the notebooks on my github here! github.com/scottthomasw...

Last weeks “Chasecation” was a great chance to relax a bit. Two days of chasing in Kansas and Nebraska followed by a trip to the Badlands can’t be beat! #WxSky

Very concerned by “Y’all Watches” on weatherwise… the idea that these are areas that the weather service may be considering warnings is not OK. There is a substantial risk for confusion with weather service products. Add that our watches are not short fuse polygon products. That is warnings.

The storms then didn't experience the low-level shear. This changes the hodograph from a veer-back hodograph that the storm would experience to a near purely anticyclonic hodograph. What was the result? We ended up with a couple of storm splits where the left mover dominated producing hail.

The radar hodograph from ahead of the TOR-E Storm modified with a nearby ASOS... look how when you modify with surface winds localized streamwise vorticity/SRH jump (not reflected in the calculations... You can plot radar hodos using code from my github here github.com/scottthomasw...
