First two paragraphs of story, 'Change'. Text follows Abigail O’Malley, age thirty-one, the middle of three daughters, grew up in the suburbs of a mid-sized city in a typical unremarkable manner. She attended university, and on graduating, found employment as a draftsperson at Bertrand’s Engineeering in a larger city. The pay was sufficient for Abigail to rent an apartment — albeit, a small one — downtown, and allowed her to put some aside for an eventual house, and an annual week-away vacation.

Extract from short story. 'Reformers': Following the Cataloguers rumbled omnivorous grazers, the great six-segmented machines birthed for no other purpose but consumption. Leading, on their first segment, great mandibles tore asunder structures of concrete, steel, and wood, and fed ever hungry maws that led to stomachs of industry in the second to fourth segments. There, in automated chambers, cities were digested; and individual metals, plastics, and rubber were extracted and cast into ingots.

I mean, can there be magic?” The Agency of Possibility guide tilted her head to the side and gave an unreadable smile. “Would you like it to be otherwise?” Abigail turned her cup another degree. “No. I suppose I wouldn’t.” Laughed, “I suppose there are some proprietary business practices that companies keep close to their heart.” “True.”

So how should we settle this?” “Riddles!” called out a voice from the audience, tipping toward a mob. “Rock, paper, scissors!” shouted another. “Combat!” a voice beneath a foam shield punched into the air, proclaiming his preference to the apparent delight of one of the celebs. “Equations!” offered up a pony-tailed woman garbed in a lab coat, brandishing a 1.22-metre long slide rule.”

A paragraph from short story wip 'Fever'. Text follows: The cave contained nothing of human invention that I could easily detect. No artifacts, paintings, or stone carvings. The cave appeared naturally formed, though what action caused it eluded me. I saw no opening from which water could flow; and, I did not yet possess the courage to poke at the ceiling for fear of trapping myself under a fall of rock.

Text follows: When he [Julian] completed his draft — 85k words exactly — in ten weeks, he put it aside to rest for another three, for he heard that’s what a writer is suppose to do before delving into editing. Therefore, he did not find it at all strange, if occasionally, he cheated and spent fifteen to twenty minutes revising snippets of his story, the count at the end of the sessions was 85k words.

Paragraph from short story 'Touch'. Text follows: Necessity charged that the hunter would never lay eyes on the object again. The thousands-strong reindeer altered their tract when the weather grew colder, drawing the nomadic people with them. The hunter’s leaders found new lands rife with food and material for fuel and shelter. Alone, without society, the hunter knew survival was unlikely. When he mated during winter and began a family, return became an impossibility; and, in time, the object faded from memory.

Opening two paragraphs to a work-in-progress novella titled 'Reformers. Text follows: While what remained of humanity cowered in deep, subterranean enclaves, Earth's surface underwent change. Forest wracked by machine, fire, and infestation turned first to stick then to ash. Dried soil, mixed with the dust of cities, was swept one way then the other, filling lowlands and accumulating when stopped by a barrier.

Opening of short story 'Author Authored'. Five paragraphs. I – Overture Things happen in airports. I wonder if I could begin a story with someone standing in line. Lucy pushed her suitcase ahead two spots. Let’s see. Two strangers collide. High school rivals reunite. Lovers separated by war — meet again after fifty years. “Next!” “Hi!” Lucy Barett skipped forward, presenting her boarding pass and ID to the agent. “Thank you.” The agent scanned both pass and ID and typed what seemed like a paragraph into her console. She then offered one of the strangest travel choices Lucy had ever heard. “You may cancel and walk away without any penalty. Full refund, including all expenses accrued. No questions asked.” “Pardon.” Lucy looked left, right, and behind her, thinking: she hadn’t heard correctly; the retreat was overbooked; or, someone was pranking her. “Gosh! No thank you. I’ve been looking forward to an opportunity like this for so long. I mean, I’m not a real author yet, but . . . Oh, I’m sorry. I’m nervous.”

Corridon preparing to immerse himself into a daydream, by creating a backstory for his character.
Two paragraph extract from 'Oriana Chronicles'. Another fantasy began forming — an old one, or rather, a composite of many. A wild world, filled with treachery and heroics, fighting between good and evil, flickered in Corridon’s imagination as he tried on one character’s mantle then another, hearing strands of his own GM introductions he had prepared for his players. A world where free men and women struggled against hoards of misshapen beasts and cruel tyrants. a medieval world where no great technology existed; motive forces were limited to natural powers. Artificial electricity was still a trifling plaything in the hands of scholars and wizards. Unquestionably, this world’s great technology was magic, the ultimate power of body and spirit working in harmony, harnessing ancient energies. Desperate attempts continued to master this fickle power. Some with success. Others bringing nations and continents to near annihilation. Stone rubble spoke of the rise and fall of countless civilizations.

Each team member has a basic AOR in their suit's P-pocket. Protocols keep flesh alived on missions and metal in optimal working conditions.
