Schmidt and Carlton are 2 of the greatest players of all time. Very different class.
That being said, I don’t think players should have to be in the HOF to have their numbers retired. It would allow them to stop reaching for Phillies Wall of Fame inductees (I.e. Lieberthal and his 3 good years).
