Fantastic day of #birding in Mallard Club Marsh Wildlife Refuge, east of Toledo on Lake Erie. Saw tons of big birds, but the highlights most enjoyed were the 20,000 lesser scaups on Erie, 120+ wood ducks, and a #lifer American Golden Plover.

It is fascinating to me that sometime in the 1920s in the USA, the upright bass replaced the tuba as the bass-note of choice in most bands.

String Bass Replacing Tuba All over New York it has been noticed that, with most of the promi- nent bands. the string bass, alias "bull fiddle", allas "dog house", is replacing the tuba. Leaders agree that the string bass has a far greater carrying power than the tuba, and that it blends much more effectively. Practically all of the exponents of the tuba double in string bass, so the only incon- venlence resulting from the switch will be the difference in sizes of the instrument cases. which take our word for it, is plenty. One week later, now with the stitches out.
A person's left hand, with a recent laceration on the index finger, now having the stitches just removed. A little residual inflammation still exists (probably from the stitches themselves).

Visiting beautiful Western Michigan this week. Lots of free mornings to do some opportunistic birding. Western Michigan is covered with little lakes, wetlands, and county-run nature preserves. Honestly, it's really great birding up here!

Shout out to the medical team at Western Maryland Regional Medical Center for stitching me back up after I was trying to show my son how to use an axe. 🤦

Some cute shorebirds on the Connecticut coast today.
A semipalmated sandpiper sits in shallow water next to a big rock. A greater yellow legs wades among the shallow water and the rocks and grasses. A semipulated plover peaks through grass in the shallow waters. Not typically classified as a shorebird, but you never see these except in the shore, a Savannah sparrow sits on the rocks. He is streaky brown and white breasted, with a wash of yellow around the face.
