His seat grew warmer and gently pulsed around his shoulders like a less intense version of the massage from earlier and he looked down as Kiran softly placed his hand on top of Elias's. "I'm here," he whispered. He gently squeezed Elias's hand and offered him a gentle smile. "We both are." Elias stared at his hand. Kiran was touching him. Kiran wanted to touch him. Elias leaned forward and after a moment's hesitation, kissed him. Kiran kissed back, his hold on Elias's hand tightening as he parted his lips, but as Elias started to slide his tongue in, Kiran abruptly backed away. “We shouldn’t. Not yet,” Kiran said, his voice quiet and gentle. “Why not?” Elias couldn’t help but ask. “Is something wrong?” Don’t let anything be wrong, he thought despite himself. There was always something wrong. Kiran shook his head. “No, nothing's wrong.” He offered a smile and rested his forehead against Elias’s. “It’s just…not yet.” Elias nodded. “Not on the first date?” Kiran bit his lip before speaking again. “It’s just…like I said. Auberon and I are always synced. Don’t know if you’re ready for that. Don't think I was either. You’ve never even talked to him, really. That should probably happen first. At least before we commit to doing anything…uh…inside him.” Elias let his body relax. Sure, it was the weirdest excuse he’d ever heard, but there was an odd sort of comfort to it. “So, I just made out with the mech too.” “Kind of? It’s complicated. I don't know how much he-wait…yeah. Ok. Yeah, no that’s exactly what happened. He says he’s sorry. He wasn’t sure. He hasn’t done this before. I don't mean sex! He's…just not with him being indirectly…look, I'm sorry too. We weren't trying to trick you. We're still figuring things out. I mean, yeah, we’ve been connected for a couple years but you're the first person we’ve-” "Wait, the robot fucks?" Elias interrupted.

SUP AGAIN #WIPSnips it's been a hot minute. But I couldn't not share this bit. It's one of my favorites. It's pretty early on, after the first battle and before Elias gets informed that the mech is, in fact, alive.
Elias leaned back in the seat and returned to gazing out of the cockpit glass at the city below. Finally, he could exhale. A quick sucession of quiet beeps caught his attention and looked to the small screen in front of him. YOU'RE A GREAT PILOT scrolled across it. Elias wasn't one to normally speak with an AI. He barely used the the voice assistant on his phone. “T…thank you?” Yeah. Still felt weird talking to it. Not like it was sentient or anything, as much as Kiran acted like it was. It couldn't even speak! Still, it kind of felt nice getting a compliment. I CAN WARM THE SEAT IF YOU'D LIKE? MASSAGE? “I’m good.” “Go for the massage,” Kiran said. “Your shoulders were super tense the whole time.” “Oh, uh …sure.” He leaned back and sighed as he felt gentle pressure squeezing his shoulders. He expected it to feel like one of those massage chairs at the mall, but this was better than that. It wasn't some preprogrammed pattern that assualted the. It felt like it could feel his tension and pinpoint how to soothe it away. He settled into the seat as it warmed ever so slightly and he felt more cradled and supported than he could ever remember. He could get used to this. “Oh my god, dude, have you tried this?” He heard Kiran chuckle. "Yeah. All the time."

He scrambled into the cockpit, and worked to start the mech up. All he had to do was take off and he'd be back with Glazer and his crew and yet he couldn't bring himself to do it. He felt sweat trickle down his forehead. What had Glazer told the Empire? Surely they could check the logs and see he'd manually ejected. Easy to think he'd deserted them all. He would be branded a traitor. He couldn't go back. Who would believe him? A comms signal beeped and the feed popped in. That pilot. "Sup, Ebony Dark'ness," he said, a smug smirk on his stupid face. Wraithe frowned. He didn't know what he'd been called, but he knew when he was being mocked. "You can go if you want. Something wrong?" Wraithe groaned as he tried to think of any way to turn things to his favor. He had nothing. He was alone. He slumped back into the seat and sighed. Pick your prison, Nowa. "I don't have anywhere to go."

The enemy unit rapidly approached and Elias could start to make out its shape. Sleek, humanoid, familiar but not. Its hull was a dark crimson, or at least the flashing red warning lights of Auberon’s cockpit made Elias perceive it as such. WRONG “Fuck,” he said as that feeling of familiarity made sense. The approaching mech looked like Auberon, except, as he’d said, wrong. DESTROY Elias swallowed hard and secured his grip on the controls before nodding. If Auberon wasn't communicating, he'd have to take control. “Sure, ok, snap to it Kir, Auberon's out of it on this one. I'm going manual.” Kiran didn’t respond and Elias felt his heart drop into the pit of the stomach. “Guys, get it together! I need you!"

Grappling against the mech, all that came to Elias’s mind was Fighter Champion. It had a grapple mechanic that Kiran liked to use, but there was a way to break out of it. Trying to keep the pressure on and thinking of how to communicate to the mech to sweep its leg up and kick, he hardly noticed himself moving his left control stick ever so slightly like the game’s input. It jerked in his hand and he gasped. Did that work? He moved the stick in a clockwise half circle and snapped it to the right as he pulled the booster. Auberon swept its leg and kicked up, breaking the hold just like in the game. Did it understand? The kick out could lead into a combo. It couldn’t hurt to try. “Are you doing your stupid combo?” Kiran shouted. “It’s not stupid if it works!”

Commander Nowa Wraithe refused to accept what he had seen on his monitors before the feed had been cut. This was only supposed to be a simple recovery mission. They’d only needed Auberon’s core and whatever resources they could get to ease the jump home. It wasn’t supposed to be operational. Prince Kiran wasn’t supposed to have survived the crash. That’s why he’d allowed Glazer so many drones to speed up the search. There wasn’t supposed to be civilization. There wasn't supposed to be life. And if there was, Glazer wasn’t supposed to engage. He exhaled as he received confirmation that his lieutenant had escaped the atmosphere. Bad enough that they’d lost so many drones. Wraithe would never forgive losing him too.

"I'm not dying because you wanted to play Grand Theft Mech." "I didn't exactly steal him," Kiran admitted. "We ran away together."
