Explorer of Public Lands, by foot and by book
They did some sandbagging a few weeks ago to protect from king tides; but, this is river water coming from the other direction...

Not yet, hoping to hear from my daughter tonight or tomorrow. Their work crew normally stages in the morning in Mt. Vernon.

Can I tease you with a photo of Mt Baker from the ferry to Vancouver Island? #ParkChat

A8. We revisited Glacier National Park for the first time since 1998, spent a winter week in Saguaro, discovered Grand Mesa NF, and did a road trip through Pennsylvania, Maryland, Virginia, and West Virginia park sites. Too many photos to choose from, but here is one of my favorites... #ParkChat

A7. Oh, too much to list! I visited the largest flattop mesa in the world in Colorado, learned about John Brown's raid, saw one of the oldest indigenous structures in the country, Effigy Mounts is great any time of the year, and much more!

A5. I learned that we can take a little more time in retirement; we've usually bee-lined to a destination. Photo from a side trip through Yellowstone on return trip from moving our daughter to Washington State.
We have the Isle Royale lodge booked and probably a trip to see our daughter. #ParkChat

Which area? I loved our hikes in the Brainard Lakes Recreation Area (which I think is adjacent or overlaps with Indian Peaks?).
Mitchell/Blue Lake and Isabelle Glacier were the two hikes that we did. #ParkChat

I hope I get a similar Isle Royale picture when I am there in 2026.

I'll share a St Mary Lake sunset from our August trip to Glacier National Park. Taken from a moving car, but turned out quite well.

My daughter's work team stages daily out of Mount Vernon, which was evacuated yesterday. I'm awaiting word on what they did today. #ParkChat

Late summer.

Coincidentally we have Isle Royale on our 2026 visit list as well!

I remind myself (and certain family members) that the opposite of DEI is "uniformity, inequity, and exclusion" to quote Pete Buttigieg. Those opposites aren't principles that lead to societal fairness or even lead to meaningful relationships.

40) The Last Ranger by Peter Heller. A fictional novel centered on a park ranger in the Lamar Valley in Yellowstone. I enjoyed the descriptive writing and character development; but, the plot seemed to leave loose ends. Maybe a sequel will be written? 4⭐

Those who do not study history are doomed to repeat it. Disappearing people who disagree with or who are different than you leads to a very dark place.

39) A Flower Traveled In My Blood by Haley Cohen Gilliland.
The true story of the Abuelas de Plaza de Mayo, grandmothers who have been fighting to find their grandchildren, stolen during Argentina’s 1970s dictatorship. Gilliland dives deep into difficult research to tell one family's story. 5⭐

This depends heavily on where you live. $140k in rural or small towns in the Midwest will go a lot farther than in the big cities. Does the article adjust for geographic differences?

I have to admit that I'm curious how DL's trip has gone so far...

Take care of yourself, looking like 6"-10" for me.

#ParkChat friends, please avoid I80 and I90 this weekend.

A significant winter storm is likely to impact portions of the Northern Plains, Upper Midwest, and Great Lakes beginning Friday through this weekend, which will impact post-Thanksgiving travel.

Part of me wants to see them try and accidentally cause the whole mountainside with all faces to crash down.

Living here in Iowa--recommend postponing or taking a southerly route if heading farther west. That map only shows chance of more than 6"; actual forecast for Des Moines is 9"-14".

Snowplows wont keep up and first major storm of the year means bad driving.
