Here's another semislug -- this time one we discovered in Brunei on one of our @taxonexpeditions.bsky.social trips--and named after Salleh, the field centre's manager, on the occasion of his retirement (photo by Pierre Escoubas)

Just returned from a 10-day expedition in Kuala Belalong, Brunei, with @taxonexpeditions.bsky.social. We found many stalk-eyed flies, mostly Diopsidae, but also these Themara true fruit flies (Tephritidae). Not sure which species: both T. ampla and T. hirsuta have been found there before.

It’s so annoying — and endearing simultaneously — how we think that when nouns are conjoined in Dutch, it’s okay to do so in English as well.

Yesterday was the 130th anniversary of the #ICZN, the International Commission for Zoological Nomenclature. It was founded during the zoology congress in Leiden, organized by the then director the Rijksmuseum van Natuurlijke Historie, Frederik Jentink.

Just a single reader’s response like this makes writing a book totally worth the effort.

De komma wint steeds meer aan kracht. Zinnen die eigenlijk door een punt of dubbele punt gescheiden zouden moeten worden, krijgen er ongegeneerd een komma tussen. Dit is bv. @thomasdeveen.bsky.social in @nrc:

Calling for removal of dead wood from forests and planting fire-resistant trees are NOT the way to reduce forest fires, @theobserveruk.bsky.social. What we need are natural, biodiverse forests that conserve moisture and quickly regenerate after fire. Dead wood & natural recruitment is what we need!

Three species of crow feasting on trash in early morning inner city of Groningen: jackdaw, carrion crow and rook! (Rooks apparently became urban while I wasn’t looking!)

Trying to troubleshoot a Sanger sequencing attempt. The PCR product in the left lane seems good quality but produces weird erroneous sequence. Any idea what could be going wrong?

At <2mm across, the prickly snail, Acanthinula aculeata, has spines that are part of the periostracum, the thin, organic layer that covers most snail shells. The periostracum is made from the protein conchiolin, so empty shells quickly lose it. But this one is still nice & fresh.

Recently, I helped Prajesa Urip, student at Manchester School of Architecture to design an urban 'eco-park' that doesn’t just decorate the city but acts as a living ecological infrastructure. It’s a habitat, a research lab, and an educational space, supporting both human and non-human life."

from @theobserveruk.bsky.social: "The UK will today announce a ban on bottom-trawling in protected parts of English seas at the UN Oceans conference in Nice. The hope is that a ban in English seas will encourage other countries to follow suit. The worst offenders are Romania, Belgium and Albania."

Despite the rain, the last day of BLOOM was such a heartwarming experience! Diehard Danes in rain gear sloshing eager-eyed from act to act, giant silver tardigrades with human faces, great music by @tigeroakmusic and the best books on offer in the @politiken book stand -- what more do you want?
