Text: Süskind lives a reclusive life between Munich and France. He has given a grand total of four interviews, according to the newspaper Süddeutsche Zeitung, most of them from the 1980s. Barely any public photos of him exist. Following a decades-long wait to obtain film rights from the author, Perfume was finally made into a film in 2006 by director Tom Twyker. Süskind did not attend the premiere.

You might assume that would be the goofiest keyboard photo we have, but I would like to present evidence to the contrary:
A Logitech MX5000 keyboard with a substantial fire blazing in the middle of the home row. Many keys on the right side, around the Enter key, have also been substantially melted, presumably from previous fires. The left side is relatively intact, for now.

Hopes for the future of display connectors, from a 1999 presentation by Intel and Silicon Image engineers who created the DVI specification. Amusing that they thought we'd get rid of VGA before we got rid of CRTs. (full presentation: web.archive.org/web/20050322... )
A slide titled "Digital Display Ramp", with the Intel logo in the corner. There's a chart showing analog/digital distribution over time (with no exact dates given). It shows that today (when the DDWG spec for DVI was released) the market is almost entirely Analog (VGA) Monitors, but projects that soon, Digital CRTs will be introduced and grow to take up the majority of the market, with analog eventually shrinking to 0. The chart also include LCDs/Plasmas slowly growing but only reaching maybe 15% by the end of the chart. Later on there's also a nebulous "New Technology" segment that grows to about 15%. The last noted event on the timeline is "Analog Legacy REMOVED!!" (their emphasis not mine)

@edent.tel Lol, what are you using to render the 3D buildings? Carew Tower is tall but it ain't that tall. The OSM way is tagged `height=574'` – I'm guessing whatever library doesn't realize that the apostrophe means it's in feet rather than meters.

just had a water fountain try to upsell me during checkout
A DropWater brand water vending machine. "Your Thirst Your Way: Try DropWater" it reads. My personal water bottle is placed under the dispenser on the left and I'm on a checkout page on the large bright touchscreen. I can choose between 4 flavor options (each for $0.07/ounce) and between chilled or ambient temperature. I have selected none of the flavors or refill options, so my price is showing as $0.00 per ounce above the "confirm order" button. There is a credit card reader below the touchscreen.

Man I used to watch so much anime, and now I have hardly thought about it in three years. And my life feels like it's been in a really good track the past 3 years. Coincidence?
My chart from anime-sedai.egoist.dev showing 227 anime that have released between 2006 and 2024 (inclusive), with the ones I've seen lit up in green. I have seen 59 of them. 2014-2017 is my densest time period, but then from 2019 to 2022 I saw just 4 of them, and I've seen nothing from 2023 or 2024.

This one drives me insane! 1) You are not even in my top 25 most-visited config folders. Ya ain't special. 2) You could literally still support the old path for anyone who wants that. 3) You don't have to split everything up; put most of it in XDG_CONFIG_HOME if you want, just not in HOME!
GitHub comment: celeron55 on Jan 14, 2014, with 1 thumbs up and 10 thumbs down: For most applications regular users don't ever want to touch the configuration files or directories. For Minetest it's almost common practice, and having to jump one extra directory level for that sucks. Also, for Minetest, configuration and mods are commonly accessed, and by the XDG standards, they would be in a different place = very inconvenient. However, I support moving the media cache to ~/.cache/minetest/, because that way backup software, users that have too little disk space and other things have easier time handling it in an appropriate way.

It's 2025. My OS was freshly installed less than 2 months ago. The XDG Base Directory specification has existed for 22 years. How is there still this much crap polluting my home folder?? What do I gotta do to get developers to use .config and .local??

I swear, @openstreetmap.bsky.social is so much fun -- scratches the same itch as Lego or Minecraft. Here's before/after of a village I mapped in rural Ohio c:
Before pic. A fairly barren map of a small village. There's a basic street grid, three parks, and maybe a dozen or so buildings across the entire area. Beyond the village the map is mostly blank, with just a few windy roads breaking up the white space After pic, zoomed in close on the village. Every single building is mapped, many businesses are marked. Farms, woods, meadows, and land uses are also mapped, so there is little blank space on the map. After, zoomed out. The woods and farms in the wider area are all mapped, and you can now see that the village lies in a flat valley surrounded by forested hills.

Working on OSM... in my head I've been calling these bits "tiger sneezes". The TIGER data curator was trying to make a smooth curve, but then they sneezed and nodes went flying everywhere.

Nothing like getting home from a long day at work and being trapped out of one's apartment! The elevator call button stopped working, and I don't have keys to the emergency stairs. Finally rode up when someone else came down, and got my tools for a temporary fix.
The elevator call button with a note that I taped to it: "PRESS GENTLY! Button is temporarily repaired with electrical tape until a permanent replacement can be made."
