Mit dem Framing hätte man mich damals auch mehr begeistern können als mit „Falls Du Arzt oder Jurist werden willst“. Ich habe es widerwillig vor Französisch belegt. Im Rückblick hat es genau die beiden genannten Dinge gebracht. Deren Wert ging mir aber erst später im Leben auf.

I‘m far from being an expert, but isn‘t the UK as well full of companies that in Germany would be called „Mittelstand“ and „Hidden Champions“, that produce those few crucial, hard to make and high value products for global supply chains?

None of the details work when said anywhere in Europe (which is not the same as the UK, btw. - just saying) among europeans. Even with all the terminology sprinkled over it. But I have grown to find it cute rather than outrageous, so go on, wrestle with that stick, buddy!

True, but isn‘t he taking the very same stance as the willing misunderstanding of the book-title as a conclusion vs. it being an open question? Hegels universalist assumptions about liberalism are paradoxically at odds with its own liberal principles when you pull your lens back to a global scale.

There is not even a shared identity narrative of what Europe wants and strives to to be. It‘s founding narrative was that of avoiding any of the 20th century continental scale disasters through liberal, rules based cooperation. But that has faded and needs a new future oriented, positive one.

If you drill down deeper, the believe in the collective submission to equal, fair and secular bureaucratic institutions is at it‘s root a christian-protestant narrative and tradition that was imposed on the world through economic, military and soft power. What takes its place in the future?

That‘s just based on their experience of you talking to them. They might be new humans with still a lot of learning ahead of them - arguably forever - but they are not idiots and they do pay attention to how you treat them.
