There are no outwardly nonbinary characters. But she does have several characters who push against what society dictates their gender to be. And there is one character who starts out female and transforms to male. The Magister Trilogy has much to say about gender.

to explore how they come across, whether they were constrained by gender, fluid in there presentation, or not. I do think her work has a lot to say about gender and how society expects people to behave a certain way. And sometimes the consequences for misbehaving can be dire...iirc the Magisters.

This feels like it could be a book club discussion. It's been ages since I delved into a character and its meaning for the reader. In C.S. Friedman's work, every character I've read has just seemed so naturally in their space and a part of their world that I would have to go back and really dig in

I love these too. I think they were some of the first fantasy novels I read.
