We cannot continue to just monitor our indicator species until they disappear altogether. Butterfly declines are our warning sign. We need governments to listen to them and respond like the emergency it is.

Just this week, the Government set a target to create or restore 250,000ha of wildlife-rich habitats in its Environmental Improvement Plan. However, there are few details on how they are going to deliver or fund this increase, so we’re asking the Government: 'Do you think you are doing enough?'

Nearly all long-term assessments of butterflies are currently ‘deteriorating’, including species on farmland, woodland, and species that specialise in specific habitats such as meadows and heathland. 📉

Restricted to only a few sites across the UK, its caterpillars feed on Aspen trees in Scotland, and at its one site in Yorkshire, it uses Creeping Willow. 🐛

Sadly, this specialist moth faces extinction in England due to climate change and overgrazing of its habitat.
