There's actually at least 21 opossum species in North America! Virginia opossums are just the only one north of Mexico
The Monito del Monte you posted is the only marsupial in the Americas that is closely related to Australasian marsupials. It's even in their superorder!

Possums in captivity will also grab blankets and stuff to take back to their nest to sleep on. You can see Elmer here doing just that

Not all species of opossum play dead (technically called apparent death), but the Didelphis genus (Virginia, common, big eared, and white eared opossums) does. They even have thicker spines than other opossums that help if animals pick em up when they’re faking death

For opossums it’s probably because their pouches are circular and not as pocket-like. They’re also on the underside of their bodies, so you can only really notice them when they’re bulging from all the joeys
