The work has been supported in part by my @schmidtsciences.bsky.social AI2050 fellowship, and the Schmidt Virtual Institute of Scientific Software has recently supported our effort to deploy the tool on iNaturalist in partnership with the @gatechengineers.bsky.social SSEC (ssecenter.cc.gatech.edu)

This work is a collaboration with a large team of diverse ecologists, led by my students Edward Vendrow, @juliachae.bsky.social and @rupakvendhan.bsky.social.

It started, as many AI efforts to address new challenges do, with the development of a benchmark: inquire-benchmark.github.io (NeurIPS 24)

If you're interested in learning more about the science behind it, we've just released a preprint describing the methodology and the tool we've built: arxiv.org/abs/2511.15656
How AI is unearthing hidden scientific knowledge
Scientists estimate that 80 percent of life on Earth is still unknown to humanity. But as global temperatures rise, habitats shrink and food and water sources dry up, we're losing these species faster...

Of course, there are lots of AMAZING places to see birds on the island, so consider this an opportunity to find bird buddies to coordinate bigger adventures with later in the week :)

We went back and forth a bunch on location, but since local transport in Waikiki can be a bit tricky decided to stay within walking distance of the conference center. We'll be taking an early-morning walk through Ala Moana Park, and will make it back before the first oral session!
