Have spent a delightful evening watching Margaret Atwood in conversation with Elif Shafak live at Croydon's Fairfield Halls this evening, which touched on many important and interesting things, not least the joy of leafing through a well-loved, dog-eared book.

Parents, please check your kids’ candy this Halloween. I’ve just found an ancient metal whistle with the inscription “QUIS EST ISTE QUI VENIT" inside a Snickers bar. I blew it and heard a note of infinite distance, and now I’m haunted by a figure in pale, fluttering draperies. Be safe.

Nice little break from transcribing letters: found these doodles of Faraday @rigb.org and Herschel in a letter from novelist Maria Edgeworth (1802-1869) in 1844 @bodleian.ox.ac.uk, writing about Faraday’s Xmas lectures on electricity - pretty solid likenesses to be honest!

My dad has unearthed and sent me a copy of my undergrad dissertation (submitted 2006), which, aside from the nostalgia, has made me realise that next year it will 20 years since I graduated and 20 years since I started working in archives. What should I do to celebrate?

Yesterday I walked the Thames Bridges Trek in memory of much-missed former colleague and dear friend Rachel Cosgrave. Rachel loved London and walking so it seemed very apt.

🔍 Did you know that we have a searchable dataset that draws on records of Londoners of African, Caribbean, Asian and Indigenous heritage in our parish registers from 1561-1840?

The project started in 2000 and, thanks to our staff and volunteers, now has records of 2600 Londoners!

I have vivid memories of visiting the Mary Rose as a child in the early 90s, walking up those metal stairs and looking out at a vast expanse of damp, dark timber and the constant drip-dripping of water.
You know it's hot when you start envying a Tudor warship in the 1980s...
