I was on hiring teams in 2012/13 where we would routinely go from applications closing to making offers within 3 weeks, sometimes 2! Because our team prioritised an efficient process.

These days, as an employee, anything faster than 3 months is basically unheard of.

A friend of mine job hunting this year eventually concluded that the only way to get a job in her sector now is to get friends/contacts to vouch for you specifically. Any open advertised job is basically so overwhelmed by assisted applicants it's impossible to stand out

Thanks Paul, that's the big question now (what are the new ones? Or do people revert back to old ones e.g. personal connections?)

Trouble is, almost every online assessment, from asynchronous videos to technical tests, are also now vulnerable to AI use.

It's a useful reminder that sometimes tech can make a task more efficient for one side (applying for jobs), and more efficient for the other side (writing job adverts), and yet make the system as a whole completely inefficient.

Yep, 30 year olds do not even want 5 bedroom houses, that’s insane. A normal definition of a “family house” in normal London is a 3 bed terrace.

...because organisations aren't bundles of individuals, but systems. And as @jasongorman.bsky.social points out, if you add a "fire-hose to your plumbing", and your plumbing has lots of bottlenecks, it might not go all that well.
