Polis by @nakhthor.bsky.social I’m also deeply absorbed by Bruce Trigger’s History of Archaeological Thought right now.

It also gets you a large 4 bedroom house on Charlbury Road. It’s not the height of luxury but central Oxford is very much not representative of house prices in England. If you live in a £2m house here or anywhere else you are very well off indeed.

They seem to be very different things though (I'd never thought about this before this morning). "Provider" = OfS regulatory catch-all term for anyone who provides a post-secondary course. "Institution" = degree-awarding, public funding, not used by OfS. www.officeforstudents.org.uk/publications...

I thought that first, but there are over 400 providers in the UK, & only 160 of them are universities. There are all sorts of unexpected organisations that are defined as 'higher education providers' like these, for example: ihe.ac.uk/our-members and I'm not surprised many are struggling.

It was the soundtrack to my 1994 before I found out about goth. Didn’t realise it came out in the 80’s! (Things hit a bit late in Ireland)

used to handling volunteers & they're amazing. I get great experience, and they get some data entry - everyone wins. The people they *depend* on, they pay. If you are a non-profit, get funding from a donor and PAY someone. Don't ask an early career person to give you free, load-bearing labour.

that is - to my mind - quite a skilled and load-bearing one, involving expert knowledge and experience (it specifically asks for it), more than a half day a week. Early career academic volunteering should give as much as it takes, and if it doesn't, it should PAY. I volunteer for an org. that is 2/3

Oh gosh - good reminder to do mine from Friday. Ended up sharing an Uber from Didcot to Oxford.
