For years, the university has faced a backlash in China, and falling student numbers. In the summer of 2022, China’s foreign ministry spokesperson Zhao Lijian called the HKC – whose namesake, Lady Kennedy, has herself been hit with sanctions by Beijing because of her criticisms of China’s human rights record – a “vanguard for anti-China forces”. Around the same time, Sheffield Hallam’s websites were blocked in China. “This undoubtedly had a negative impact on recruitment in 23/24,” a university employee wrote in July 2024. The person also wrote: “Attempting to retain the business in China and publication of the [HKC] research are now untenable bedfellows.”

Pam Bondi says Facebook removed a page about ICE activity following "outreach" from DOJ.

DOJ "will continue engaging tech companies to eliminate platforms where radicals can incite imminent violence against federal law enforcement." (Once again: Speech is not illegal just because ICE dislikes it.)
Bondi tweet: Today following outreach from @thejusticedept , Facebook removed a large group page that was being used to dox and target @ICEgov agents in Chicago. The wave of violence against ICE has been driven by online apps and social media campaigns designed to put ICE officers at risk just for doing their jobs. Thank you, Bill Burr, for being paid handsomely to perform at the Riyadh Comedy Festival for Saudi Arabia’s “oppressed people.” Very courageous.

Bill Burr is lashing out at critics for slamming his appearance at the Riyadh Comedy Festival. During an interview on the “Conan O’Brien Needs a Friend” podcast, Burr said he does not “give a fuck what all these phony fucking people are saying.” “The general consensus is, ‘How dare you go to that place and make those oppressed people laugh, you fucking piece of shit. I can’t believe you went to that place. I can’t find it on a map, and this bot said I was upset about it so now I am,'” Burr said about the outrage over the festival. “It’s one thing to wear clothes made by sweatshop labor. It’s quite another to go to the factory and make ’em laugh. I can’t believe how much anger I had about this issue after it went viral

Burr painted a portrait of a region where people were, well, “just like us” — wanting live comedy, wanting to relax and have fun, and consuming a surprising amount of Western culture. “It was great to experience that part of the world and to be a part of the first comedy festival over there in Saudi Arabia,” Burr said. “The royals loved the show. Everyone was happy. The people that were doing the festival were thrilled. The comedians that I’ve been talking to are saying, ‘Dude, you can feel [the audience] wanted it. They want to see real stand-up comedy.’ It was a mind-blowing experience. Definitely top three experiences I’ve had. I think it’s going to lead to a lot of positive things.” Burr said the restrictions on what comedians could say had been softened by the festival after some back and forth (Burr didn’t specify with whom). “When they first set it up, the rules on what they had about what you could and couldn’t say in Saudi Arabia, [organizers were told], ‘If you want some good comedians, this isn’t going to work.’ And, to their credit, they said, ‘All right, what do we got to do?’ And they just negotiated it all the way down to just a couple things, which were, basically: Don’t make fun of royals [and] religion.” (The speech restrictions were posted online by comedian Atsuko Okatsuka, who turned down the festival’s offer to attend, and it’s unclear if these were the rules from before or after the talks.)

You will be shocked, SHOCKED, to learn that comedians performing in Riyadh are banned from performing material that mocks or criticizes the Saudi government and royals. Who could’ve predicted that a country that executes journalists and jails and tortures its critics would have such policies???
One of the screenshots of the alleged contract states in its “Content Restrictions” section, “ARTIST shall not prepare or perform any material that may be considered to degrade, defame, or bring into public disrepute, contempt, scandal, embarrassment, or ridicule: “A) The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, including its leadership, public figures, culture, or people; B) The Saudi royal family, legal system, or government, and; C) Any religion, religious tradition, religious figure, or religious practice.”
