Witch, pagan, tarot reader, and author of books about inclusive spiritual practice. Quite queer. || she/they
This is the best Beowulf translation. I will hear no arguments. This used copy has been with me since university and has been lovingly carried along ever since.

And for a more adult take on the Poetic Edda, I like this translation. Bonus points for a pretty cover.

This one has a special place in my heart because it was my introduction to the gods I now worship, but it's also a pretty great "Eddas for kids" book. When my siblings started having kids, I bought a copy to read to the young 'uns.

THE book on the Fair Folk as far as I'm concerned. Daimler does great research and is rightfully one of the authors I recommend most often.

It's a good one!

Mountain Magic is much more Appalachia-specific, but if that interests you, it's wonderful!

Same!

It's a great read for sure.

That's about where I am.

That's so sad to hear! Ugh.

Like I said, I'd love to see proof of a change for the better. Unfortunately, I'm not seeing any statement from Ballard that her views have changed, or even an apology for her past actions. As a queer person, I'm not comfortable supporting her without being sure I'm not supporting transphobia.

I hope so! I'd love to be able to recommend her books again. I'll keep looking for some sort of statement of her current views. I love to see people grow and change as they learn more. We all make mistakes, and it's always great when someone takes accountability and changes for the better.

A few years ago, Ballard was involved in a "biological women only" ritual at Pantheacon led by notorious transphobe Z. Budapest: www.patheos.com/blogs/agora/...

This was several years ago, so it's possible her views have changed, but I haven't seen any statement rescinding her past transphobia.

I know! I was very disappointed when I found out.

It looks like the most explicitly transphobic posts have all been scrubbed from her page, which is a good sign! Hopefully it's because her views have changed and not just a reaction to backlash.

Ballard has used her Facebook page to spotlight TERF blog posts by other authors on multiple occasions. Let me see if I can find the source.

I have books on African spirituality because many of my IRL friends and neighbors practice ATRs, and I want to be educated so I can be a good ally in interfaith spaces. Not because I intend to incorporate closed cultural practices into my own spiritual path. See the difference?
