This is, IMO, the single greatest threat to the left in the US, and the one to which it is most blind.

Simplest answer: right wing ideas were relegated to digital spaces right before the influence of digital and its creators came to dominate.

We on the left got comfortable winning legacy media/ entertainment as they lost power.

Now, we’re the ones in the corner and we have a choice to make.
Hopefully clear to folks by now that the online media asymmetry isn't tenable. Still wondering how it came about in the first place, though. We're not exactly short of underemployed left-leaning people in the entertainment industry!

It’s 3 am on the last day of Jay Inslee’s 12 years as WA’s governor, and I’m up feeding my 1 week old daughter.
