I buy Allianz travel insurance & read the fine print. While the countries that make up the Shengen area are highly functional, I once found myself out of the cost of a trip before I even left the US. My friend & I were reimbursed different amounts despite traveling on the same flight.

In the last 6 years, I have been on Aetna, United Health Care, and Blue Shield. They are all fucking nightmares that make absolutely zero sense and just suck the money out of your pocket. (My husband had this golden-ultra platinum plan through work and they still sucked.)
