Hi, a medievalist here! Yes, clear glass urine bottles were a vital, sometimes elegant & expensive, part of doctor's equipage.
Looking at the color and consistency was a diagnostic tool, and yes, they would dip a finger in urine to see if it tasted sweet, as a diabetes Dx tool.
