As we do every year, we gathered creators in all positions related to animation as well as people passionate about art to share the works, old and new, that they've loved the most over the last year. It's finally time for the Sakugabooru Animation Awards 2025! blog.sakugabooru.com/2026/01/23/s...

Oshi no Ko has always been harsh on the entertainment industry, but there's a fundamental difference between its usual critique (which *can* be pointed) and allowing a brilliant woman to direct an opening that's explicitly about aspects like the commodification of young, predominantly female bodies

But what I think makes the anime in particular interesting is the inviting worldbuilding, where the beautiful art direction is the vehicle to show you distinct forms of culture and how those relate to time. And that's still very much there, because the ideologues behind this philosophy never left

Obviously it rules that they get the bombastic parts right. Kouta Mori's sequence (maru corrections!) feels like it channels Tano-ish effects from a different era altogether, matched with an example of good modern processing. The way the flare is given weight by pushing him back? Soooooooo good

Sometimes, a vtuber Minecraft server spawns a novel that gets published *and* animated, which then baits an animator who's known for action but eternally yearns to return to a bygone era of bishoujo. Those are things that happen, and I get a Naoto Hosoda ED out of it www.youtube.com/watch?v=jQhx...

Wrote about how Apocalypse Hotel, through a bumpy creative process, accumulated many artistic lineages & viewpoints. Wrote about Hyakuemu / 100 Meters as the intersection of two rising stars in manga and film: Uoto & Kenji Iwaisawa. Despite their very distinct voices, a shared fascination with illogical human passion led to an incredible, affirming movie that will make you RUN blog.sakugabooru.com/2025/12/27/h...

Normally, the copium responses to the studio's teasers are completely detached from reality... but what they've done with this one is diabolical. Generic enough to be many things, yet brutally close to some people's dreams

I do feel a bit for the people who paid for Virgin Punk screenings without knowing it's not a movie, and the messaging should definitely have been clearer, but cmon we need a bit of grift to fund Umetsu's team locking themselves in the basement for 23 years so that they can finish it

Speculated about Momoka Hase being the art director because she worked in the novel. The secret artboards did look Liz-ish which fit the bill, but the painterly style is something I'd associate with Mao Takayama and she's also available for a debut

That or Yamasaki since she's the big weirdo--

CITY was one of a kind, and I don't think anything except seeing it can convey that. It is wildly creative, a celebration of the studio behind it as it heads towards the future in the wake of tragedy (and what a bright future it is), as well as an unabashed love letter to the medium of animation.
