Even if you want to shift how you feel & function, you don't have to fundamentally change in order to "deserve" love or safety. You're worthy right here, right now, having changed exactly 0% of who you are. Change if you want to & if you choose to-- but know you don't "have" to.

BC residents:

The proposal to ban lead shots in BC is up for public commentary. It's more expensive to switch to copper bullets but raptors and other birds die every year from eating carcasses contaminated by lead. Please voice your comments to help get this ban enacted! Closes Feb 13th.
Prohibit the use of lead shot for the purpose of hunting

Validation & relating to ourselves w/ compassion & realism are ALWAYS front line trauma recovery tools. They're never the "wrong" tools to use, even if a situation requires additional self talk, focus, or physiology skills to effectively manage.

You can be getting perfectly competent psychotherapy, but still feel uninspired & unsupported. Trauma & dissociation are incredibly isolating, & we can get convinced we're to blame for feeling alone & inadequate. But it's not your fault-- and you're absolutely not the only one.

Self-validation & self-compassion have to be meaningfully baked into every realistic trauma recovery tool we develop.

People who think validation & compassion are these warm & fuzzy "optional" tools do not understand the nuts & bolts of sustainable recovery.

No matter the trigger, it's never the wrong response to push pause, step back, breathe, & check in w/ ourselves. Whatever the trigger is, we're going to need space, self-awareness, & oxygen to process it & respond intelligently.

When in doubt, hit up those basics.

(This came flooding back after reading just one line. Simon and Garfunkel, The Sound of Silence LP)

… I have my books and my poetry to protect me,
I am sheilded in my armour,
I have no need of friendship,
friendship causes pain,
Its laughter and its loving I distain.

I am a rock,
I am an island

We are community or we are less. We are engines of kindness and connectivity or we are less. When decency is framed as a radical position we must remain who we are. Our resistance is also in refusing to be less openhearted and filled with compassion.

Feeling overwhelmed by life tasks you never had the support or safety to learn isn't you "failing." The story here isn't how much you suck or struggle. The story here is how you MacGyver'ed your way through without a life preserver. You are a f*ckng genius. Do not doubt it.

Easy does it. Take a breath. Whatever it is— we’ll handle it.

Nobody’s mad, and nobody is in trouble. Breathe; blink; focus.

Remember today that CPTSD is not a "weakness." It is a point of vulnerability that needs to be managed w/ realism & care-- no more, no less.

CPTSD is not your entire life or personality. It's a wound that you are actively working to understand & heal.

Baby steps.

Very often the best choice we can make in trauma recovery is to hang out w/ the feeling we're experiencing right now. Not demand it go away. Not shame ourselves for feeling it.

Breathe into it, let it exist, forgive ourselves & it-- & just be with it. Listen to it.

Every "choice" we've ever made has actually been a ratio of choice & autopilot-- but we've been conned into assuming all our "choices" have been "free." To sustainably recover from CPTSD, we need to get real about how much our trauma conditioning has f*cked w/ our "decisions."

Your body is sacred. The fact that someone in the past did not understand or respect that does not make it less so.

Evil people defile sacred spaces every day. Those spaces are not rebuilt by denying their power or beauty-- but by affirming it.

Somebody somewhere is having one of the worst days of their life-- & doesn't have the safety or support to honestly talk about it. If that's you, know that your lack of safety & support doesn't mean you or your pain don't matter.

Just breathe, & take this one minute at a time.

What many don't understand-- because it freaks them the hell out-- is that self harm behavior (up to & including suicidal ideation) often serves a regulatory function for trauma survivors, rather than being an expression of self-hate. (Though, yes, that's a thing, too.)
