The 4 nations spent a combined £67m on CO₂ monitors for use by teachers in classrooms

Boris asks
Were lockdowns worth it?

Teachers ask
What were we meant to do when the monitors turned red?

The nation asks
Did red mean he poured another?

In Hampshire, illness is the leading cause of all absence for pupils AND teachers.

What’s the leading cause of absence for pupils & teachers in your area?

📌 C19 spreads more easily than most other respiratory viruses & remains a consistent risk in all seasons.

2,796,380 teaching days are lost to sickness absence in England

£222 is spent per pupil on supply teacher costs

That’s 3.91% of all teaching costs per student

Yet clean air costs less than the price of a pizza per child, per year

We really valued joining the World Ventilate Day panel on Engineering Healthier Indoor Environments. The discussion on effective ventilation resonated - these are the same challenges we hear from parents and teachers regularly.

The Department of Education itself admits COVID and Long COVID are likely to have a long-term impact on children’s education.

Where is the public health information?

Every child deserves clean, safe air in school

Blimey that’s toxic!

By contrast the House of Commons is doing very well, thank you very much!

Can we have clean air for all kids please?

Last year we wondered what the air quality was like inside a school so we sent a kid in with an air quality monitor. What did we find?

Locally, 15 schools in Portsmouth are in neighbourhoods that exceed WHO guidelines, twice. It is most certainly a social justice issue and something we need nationally.

Last week, the UK Covid Inquiry showed children weren’t seen as a priority to protect. The toll is heartbreaking - lives lost, health harmed, futures changed. Yet SARS-2 is just one of many airborne hazards children face in schools.

Indeed they are, Ian. Opening windows isn't always possible, or enough. The DfE know this and recommend air filters.

We’re working with James and @housefresh.bsky.social to find the best filters for classrooms. Here is a sample of the running costs.

As the UK Covid Inquiry prepares to hear about children harmed during the height of the pandemic, a book of stories written by children living with #LongCovid was gifted.

Among its pages are words of these children’s friends.

At aged 9 and 13, these children know: this is about more than viruses. Safe, sustainable & equitable education begins with the air they breathe, and when we protect our most vulnerable, we protect everyone.
