The spoken section at the end acknowledges the harm that we did in the name of a religion we no longer follow. It’s easy to say, “But I didn’t know any better!” and that’s true, but the harm caused is also true. I know I hurt people in the name of God, even while being hurt in the same way.

This song sounds like it was written about me. There is a grief and liberation that comes from deconstruction from southern/rural Christianity that is difficult to relay to those who haven’t experienced it.
