That’ll do it because that’s always happened if you appear in a magistrates court. Cases are referred to Crown court if the offence would a carry sentence longer than the magistrate can impose. The length of sentence available to magistrates was increased before without any fuss.

Great idea spooks but everything needs more money, meanwhile people still wait years for justice.

Everything needs proper investment. Try convincing the electorate. This is a practical attempt to clear a four year backlog for justice.

Nothing right wing about having sat on juries and knowing that they’re imperfect; and some members aren’t particularly engaged on the evidence/law.

Juries can come to perverse decisions. They don’t guarantee justice however much they’re cherished.
The reality is that people are waiting years for trials and justice now.

The courts wouldn’t be secret and trials for serious offences such as rape, terrorism and murder would still have juries.
