it takes ages for that water to come back as rain to refill the reservoir. Often in the US this just results in locals paying more on water bills or the unscrupulous companies just pumping unsafe water through the pipes. Not having a go just wanted to be clear for anyone reading the problems caused

Ok obviously you can't waste water but practically if you are putting extra load on local reservoirs to use water for cooling (reservoirs which are often close to empty due to climate change), then pumping out the heated water into rivers (not great for the ecosystems)
