It’s true that voters have preferences.
It’s also true that voters can change their preferences and priorities.
The popularists would’ve had democrats say nothing about El Salvador.
Because democrats *did* point out how cruel it was, it hurt republican approval on immigration.
Simon Bazelon & @simon_bazelon Follow I think this gets to a lot of my frustrations about people not respecting voters. Voters hold sincere preferences on issues like immigration and crime, which are important to them. We're not going to be able to buy them off any more than we were able to buy off the Teamsters by funding their pension. There is just no substitute for authentically advocating for positions voters agree with on the issues they care about! Unfortunately, an enormous amount of time and energy on the left is spent coming up with theories of politics that disregard voters' actually existing preferences and deny any tradeoffs, in order to absolve us of the need to do anything differently.
