I’m not disputing any of that. I’m just saying the push to ban TikTok began because of concerns re. China. And that the ban (not actually a ban but a forced sale) should be upheld because of China.

Maybe it helped push it across the finish line, but I believe it had nothing to do with the push to ban it in early 2023. Israel/Palestine was just not a big issue on the platform before 10/7.

It’s not just that the platform is controlled by a hostile state actor; they also are collecting enormous amounts of data on Americans.

Come on man, both of these things can be true 1) TikTok should be banned because it’s a Chinese propaganda outlet, congress recognized this pre-10/7/23, and 2) how TikTok affected the narrative around Gaza has given them extra motivation to ban it more recently. I’m not disputing you may be right.

The article I replied with was from March 2023, 6 months before the Israel/Hamas war started. Maybe this gave them added urgency, but congress started trying to ban TikTok well before Gaza.
