They could have had federal troops protect them. Instead, the Confederate "government" drafted fighters. Others volunteered: hence "Tennessee Vols." Confederates ended up fighting former slaves anyway, as former slaves volunteered as federal troops.

Yes, and having the losers and all of their progeny despise this country has not done us any favors. After 160 years of formal "resistance," now they are actively dismantling the government and killing anybody they recognize as not them: Black and brown people, "yankees," (blue states), academia.
