I'm getting tired of people in this neighborhood letting their dogs run around off-leash. This big boy did NOT like me trying to check his collar for an owner's phone number. (No rabies tags either!) C'mon, people!

This shopkeeper in Marrakech had the most amazing selection of platters, jewelry, pitchers—you name it. All with the patina of age and aura of hand-made authenticity. Get lost in the souks!

It's Sugar's job to "guard" against...anything, really. But sometimes she gets tired and her giant head gets so full of dog thoughts that it becomes too heavy and she has to prop it up.

I'm working on a @nytimes.com piece on how #learning even a little of a foreign #language can enhance your #travel experience. If you speak or #teach a second language or if you learn new languages for trips, I want to hear from you! [email protected]

I'm working on a #travel story for NY Times about #statepark alternatives to #nationalparks. If you are/were planning a #parks trip but have concerns about federal staffing and budget cuts, please contact me at [email protected].

Amazingly, it looks like META used on old (and very silly) book @robterrell.com and I wrote to train its AI. This strikes me as decidedly bad news for their AI. (As much as I'd like to claim authorship on the second search result, that's someone else.) @TheAtlantic has details: tinyurl.com/46uj2ahd

The spaceships just east of my house look like they might finally stop hovering and land.

I wouldn't say it's quite springtime in the Rockies yet. But the quick transition in #Wyoming from sub-zero to the low 50s after 2+ feet of snow has brought about a mini slushmudcalypse. My #dog Sugar doesn't mind.

I'm not a big tea drinker, but mint #tea is a huge thing in #Marrakech, #Morocco. I tried & liked all kinds of tea there. Spice vendors will blend a custom mix for you, aiding with everything from deep focus to relieving constipation.

I have a piece out today for #BlackHistory Month at #NatGeo National Geographic about how the Buffalo Soldiers literally blazed trails in the national #parks. I knew some of the #history, but learned a lot in researching this.

Not really a costume—regalia is the preferred word for the outfits dancers like these wear during the Plains Indian Powwow at the Buffalo Bill Center of the West in Cody, Wyo.

Hünkar Beğendi (literally "the Sultan liked it") is a lamb stew served on a bed of creamy, smoked or roasted eggplant puree. I didn't expect to like it, but it was delicious. Also: the chef from Ayşa in Kemeraltı who made the dish.

Here's some more pics from my recent trip to #Istanbul and #Izmir in #Türkiye. The seafood in Izmir was fantastic—you picked what you wanted from a cooler, or from this huge array of mezze. I also had some of the best calamari (outside of Italy) ever.

In the Yerebatan Cistern (or Basilica Cistern) in Istanbul, columns were built using older, reclaimed bits and pieces from other structures. That includes a couple of Medusa heads used as column bases, turned sideways or upside down, to subvert her power. #travel #Türkiey #photography #history

All of these felines in Catstanbul seemed content to pose for (or ignore) the camera. There are cats everywhere you turn in Istanbul, including inside bars, hotels and restaurants. Most of the ones I saw looked well cared for.

This #fox in #Yellowstone Park was hanging around a turnout where a few vehicles had congregated. Seemed like it was waiting for a handout, approaching cars without fear. People have probably been feeding it. Please don't feed the animals—it's not good for them.
